National seminars for the endusers
R3L is a budget line which shall help to establish and continue learning regions. It is the aim of GEFAS Steiermark to integrate life long learning in the post-professional phase. This approach is new and innovative and that is why the project LISA – Learning in Senior Age – was considered eligible by the EU commission. Any new idea has to overcome obstacles until it becomes established. Even though GEFAS Steiermark found transnational partner organisations who deal with similar issues, the new task was a kind of unknown territory. That is why we felt obliged to make available all our knowledge and experiences to all our partner organisations. This means that GEFAS Steiermark involved endusers in the development of the project right from the beginning.
In Graz, Styria, pilot seminars with an intergenerative approach were offered in order to gain experience for building up learning regions for older people. These experiences served as tools to help our transnational partners.
Establishing a learning region for older people is inseparably connected with the end-users and their ideas of what and how they want to learn. Following this condition the coordinating organisation GEFAS Steiermark, who is responsible for carrying out and conceptualising LISA – Learning in Senior Age – has offered a series of seminars by and for older people right from the beginning in September 2002. This means that the lecturers are also persons in their post-professional phase. The seminars offered comprise the following themes.
Seminars for education in senior age – vivid learning
- Health prevention project in rural and urban areas (giving an impetus on various topics, individual realization) Branka Bräunlich, Christa Wascher, Gudrun Wrentschur
- Talking health (“Comprehensible Medicine”) Gertrud Wilfing
- Movements – learning at new places – Martina Stattegger
- Movements – everyday culture and tradition – “Walking through the City” Ingrid Skarlin
- Intergenerative, social learning as shown in “Festival of the Generations” (passing on knowledge, coaching; its realization is result oriented) Emmy Mautner, Helga Richter, Edda Krobath, Mag. Günter Abraham
- Intergenerative learning – ICH AG (I am a valuable resource) Elfriede Grohs
- Education for women 50plus (AGE – Aktivität, Gesundheitsbildung, Empowerment / Activity, Health Education, Empowerment) Mag. Eva Wagner, Dr Rosemarie Kurz
- GeFACETTEN – learning easily how to live – for young and old people – Barbara Schnepf
- Changing our lifeworlds (planning advanced age) Gabriele Fresner
- Creative design for all occasions (discovering talents) Marianne Höber
- Media Short Cut (How to write a newspaper article; how to organise a presentation; presenting myself; making contacts …) Christa Wascher
Older men and women were invited to use these offers and to actively participate. They were asked to question the content and methods and to contribute their personal wishes and ideas. By using this method, these courses and seminars carried out by GEFAS Steiermark changed during the EU project LISA. The seniors were asked to suggest organisations they considered worth being part of the network education. By this participatory method valuable impulses were contributed to the project LENA – Learning in the Post-professional Phase. This project will follow up LISA and the application for this project has already been submitted. LENA will develop a curriculum for learning in the post-professional phase.
The lecturers who can be considered end-users themselves and the course participants were in permanent contact with the project management of LISA. By means of questionnaires and interviews the endusers were requested to suggest important themes and point out organisations that should be involved in the project. Furthermore, it was necessary to find out which learning methods the seniors either preferred or rejected.
Summary:
Interactive learning, which crystallized during the pilot project, was discussed by the transnational project partners in order to achieve the aim of the project, namely establishing a learning region “Education and Getting Older” and to overcome any possible national obstacles.
Evaluation of the LISA pilot education offerings
Currently concomitant education programmes are mainly used by women in the age group between 50 and 70. Only ten per cent of the course participants are men.
A survey shows that education and continuing education is equated with activity, agility, training and broadening one’s interests and mind. About 90 per cent of the participants consider education and continuing education important or very important. The participants are mainly interested in already existing education programmes on health, solidarity between generations, education of women, gender, planning advanced age and PC/internet.
Personal development and enjoying to learn something new are the main reasons for attending courses. The greater number of participants is willing to invest five per cent of their income and two to four hours a week into continuing education.
Two third of the group asked for their opinion use the new methods and prefer them to other methods.
